Happy Hour Math

Happy hour math is different from regular math.

Regular math says two drinks plus appetizers equals a bill. Happy hour math says you saved money by spending money, which is technically suspicious but emotionally correct.

A good happy hour is not only about the discount. It is about timing, clarity, and whether the deal is easy to understand without needing a laminated flowchart. Nobody wants to solve a riddle to find out if domestic drafts are cheaper between 4:17 and 5:03 on alternating Thursdays.

The best specials are simple. A few dollars off drinks. A food deal that feels worth leaving the house for. Maybe a wing night, taco night, burger deal, or something involving fries that quietly becomes the reason everyone shows up.

The Bar Examiner likes clear specials because people like clear specials. If a bar has a great happy hour, it should be easy to find. If the special expired in 2021, that should be easy to fix.

Happy hour is serious business. Not mature business, necessarily. But serious.
